Coastal Housing Studio (2015)

Housing for the Coastal Studies Institute

Project Summary

Located on Roanoke Island, the UNC Coastal Studies Institute (CSI) currently comprises a research building and a boathouse, strategically placed in a marshy habitat. The campus experience is one of openness, amplified by the immense scale of the surrounding flat landscape. This project sought to preserve the experience while creating a new one by proposing a residential complex not on the existing site, but in a very different location: a wooded area adjacent to the main campus.
